Exploring Regulation of AI
Hello, and welcome to Responsible, by ClearOPS, a newsletter about ResponsibleAI and other responsible business practices.
I have decided to dedicate tonight’s newsletter to AI legislation. There are some fascinating things happening in the world’s attempt to regulate AI. Besides, I am a lawyer after all 😉
What I have for you this week:
US AI Legislation
Legislation happening in other parts of the world
Caroline’s weekly musings
My Custom GPT
How to build an AI Governance program
AI Bites
Let’s start with the Federal landscape. I think most people felt that the overturned Chevron decision meant any AI legislation was dead in the water.
Hold on.
Then Kamala Harris became the most likely Democratic nominee for President. In case you don’t know, Harris was the Attorney General for the state of California. Her time was earmarked for pushing consumer privacy rights well before GDPR. It is possible that with a President Harris, we could see the passage of a Federal AI bill.
But the states aren’t falling behind. California has been quite active introducing AI regulation. Check out this tracker. Am I surprised that CA is so active on AI? Of course not, but let’s not forget that NY has been on top of the AI topic as well. In fact, the NYC Anti Bias law was passed in 2021 and went into effect over a year ago on July 23, 2023!
We all know about the EU AI Act, but I have been pleasantly surprised by how on top of AI Singapore is. It is considered a leader in the regulation of AI and creating standards for Responsible AI. It makes me want to go there. I, personally, included their framework and content in my custom GPT AIAssess.
The UK and China have also been very active. The UK has been trying to push its AI agenda as “innovation friendly” while China seems particularly focused on Generative AI.
I found this global tracker to be informative in case there are other countries that are particularly interesting to you.
